Tips to help save money
There are lots of ways to save money that take very little effort. Consider your cell phone bill. The cellular providers just made a big change in the industry with a rash of $99/month unlimited plans. But, many people who are locked into a contract think they can't take advantage of that. They can. Just call your cell phone provider, but do your homework first. If you read your last three bills, and have a good idea of your voice and data usage, you can switch plans today. Be polite, but persistent, and they'll help you, and you may even get a new phone to boot. There's also easy ways to save money on gas. Did you know that for every 5 mph over 60 mph you drive is costing you 30 cents per gallon ? Or, that a dirty air filter can reduce your miles per gallon by up to 10 percent ? Another great way to save money on gas is to apply for a gas rebate credit card. They offer up to 5 percent cash back on your auto-related purchases, including gasoline. And at home ? A simple way to drive your water bill lower is to install low-flow shower heads. They use less than half the water of a regular shower head...and by injecting air into the flow, you won't notice the difference. Also consider switching electric companies. Many states have deregulated electric delivery, allowing several companies to compete for your business. And, it's just an easy phone call to switch. Typical savings are 10 percent, but some people are saving 20 percent or more. Currently, the following states allow competition: Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Oregon, Texas, Arizona, Washington D.C., Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Michigan, Virginia, and New Hampshire. If you are in a state that doesn't allow competition, consider some ideas to lower your current electric bill. Switching to compact fluorescent bulbs will save you nine dollars a year for each standard bulb you swap out. They last seven years each, so that's $63 over the lifetime of each bulb. Also, if you have an older electric water heater, consider installing a timer to turn it off overnight, or during the day if you are at work.
